Huzzah! is a new trio made up of three well-established musicians who are also good friends: Ivano Bonfanti from Proper on guitar and vocals, Gaz Evans, formerly of The Fallen Leaves, on bass and backing vocals, and Buddy Ascott, formerly of The Chords and The Fallen Leaves, on drums. Their first release is a double A-side single, Only One Way (3:24) and You Get Me (2:44), out on 25 September on Spinout Nuggets as catalogue number SN188.
It is a very small run. The single is a lathe cut 7-inch limited to 50 copies, cut by Russ Wilkins at the Rochester Cutting Room, and it is also available as a download. The label's press sheet describes the two songs as "acerbic slabs of revengeful mirth and dynamic rhythms" and files the single under power pop and post punk. Its serving suggestion is "best served – and enjoyed – good and cold".
Three players with this much history on the same record, a double A-side and a run of just 50 copies is a combination I'm happy to back. A one-off like this is easy to miss when it only exists as a handful of lathe cuts and a download, so I'd rather say plainly that I'm glad to recommend it.
The trio spent time together in the studio of the late Pat Collier, the producer, and the press release calls the result "a thing of rare beauty". The sheet adds that the single was recorded and mixed at Perry Vale Studios by Jess Corcoran and mastered by Jim Riley at Ranscombe Studios in Rochester, Kent.
Is it a one-off? Will they gather again? The label says nobody knows, and that for now these two songs mark the occasion.
