Weather Happy are a new UK alt-rock duo and their debut EP Moth is out now on Easy Does It Records. It has four tracks – It Leaks Out, Trees, Day Storm and Moth – and was made with Rod Jones of Idlewild as producer.
The duo are Holly Carter on vocals and guitars and drummer Harry Carter. They share a surname and have been friends since they first picked up their instruments, when they played what they describe as some pretty clunky Blink-182 covers. Holly was previously the frontwoman of Berries, who made two albums for Xtra Mile Recordings, got plays on BBC 6 Music, Radio 1 and Radio X and toured with The Subways, Frank Turner, Sleeper and Porridge Radio.
Harry has worked as a session drummer and band member across a wide range of genres, and has recorded at Abbey Road, RAK and Albion Rooms.
The press release describes the sound as crunchy and mathy with spiky, wonky rhythms, and says the guitar and drums duel with each other, which lets them play with structures and time signatures. Harry says he and Holly naturally push each other into unexpected places, so "rhythms shift and morph spontaneously into something completely new". Holly says the EP includes some of the rawest and most angular music either of them has ever written.
I'm pleased to back a duo who are starting again after a band that went down well with the likes of Clash and Louder Than War, and who have taken the trouble to get Rod Jones in the studio for the first release. A friendship that goes back to clunky Blink-182 covers is a good reason for me to pay attention.
The release points to early Biffy Clyro and Sleater-Kinney as reference points. The singles from the EP are It Leaks Out, Trees and the current focus track Day Storm.
