Matt Finucane – Ruination, Brighton noise built from two decades in music’s dark corners

Wednesday 21 October 2026

Matt Finucane has spent over two decades making music in what his own press release calls the dark underbelly of the scene, working out of Brighton. His new album Ruination is out digitally on 30 October, with a physical release on Eyeless Records to follow.

He's been compared to David Bowie, Mark E Smith and Lou Reed over the years, and Ruination takes his angular, feedback-heavy sound a step further still. "This album was recorded in glamorous Portslade with the avowed intent of mashing together layers and layers and layers of very loud guitars," he says. "The guitar as an instrument is a fossilised yawn from a cave of death, but the noise it creates, the rapturous uncontrollable noise… that's the whole point. Not the songs, not the words. Just the noise they are a carrier for. Noise has no gods, no morals, no gender."

Twenty-odd years in and still not interested in being anyone's friend or chasing a Like button, by his own description – that's a harder line to hold than it sounds, and it's the reason this one gets a mention here rather than a scroll past.

Lead single Dead Artform takes aim at a more current target – AI techbros trying to strip-mine the world – with Finucane repeating "this is a dead artform, as dead as me" over the noise. It's on Bandcamp now, with the rest of Ruination to follow via Eyeless Records on the 30th.
