New single out today from Magic Tailgate Band, called St.Christine – "psychedelic garage rock n roll from deep inside the spirit of '65", according to the press release, which is more games-playing than your average pitch.
The song itself is a dirty, bluesy, angry tale about struggling against the current, covering your tracks and running into a few demons along the way, set in a hidden town "forsaken by a saint who may never have existed." It seems a bit understated the first time round, but there's a quiet confidence about it that gets stronger every time you play it. It turns out it's very carefully put together, and there's a LOT of subtle character in there too.
There's apparently a cover of The Turtles' Buzzsaw on the tape too, "recorded live at The All Kinds of Hell Club" – which, going by the rest of the email, could be entirely made up. When asked (by themselves) "so who are Magic Tailgate Band?", the press release answers its own question with "does this help?… no?… thought not." Fair enough.
St.Christine is out now (16 October). More at magictailgate.band.
