New single out from Manchester collective Caulbearers, called Brothers At The Wheel – a political one, featuring folk singer Ruth Blake, that moves from disillusionment with empty promises from people in power towards what the press release calls "a rallying cry for solidarity and grassroots resistance." It previews their new album Come Back Home, out 30 October on Single Cell Recordings.
It's a song that gets a LOT out of holding back – it never overstates anything, and somehow ends up hitting much harder because of it.
Caulbearers have been going since 2007, led by Damien Mahoney, and mix soul, funk, hip-hop, dub and post-punk influences with a strong DIY streak running through everything they do. The video, made with visual artist Latent Variables, was filmed around Mahoney's own neighbourhood in Old Trafford, setting boarded-up buildings against the area's community murals. "They bring a much-needed display of beauty, nature and hope in what is a very urban environment," Mahoney says of the murals.
It was mixed by Seadna McPhail (Badly Drawn Boy, Happy Mondays) and mastered by Jim Spencer, who's worked with New Order and Johnny Marr.
Brothers At The Wheel is out now on Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp.
