Scale are a London indie band who haven't been going for a year yet, and their debut single October is out on 30 October on Bad Mood Records / Universal Music. It has already been premiered on Steve Lamacq's show on 6 Music, which isn't a bad start.
They're a bit mysterious too – they don't give out the members' names, and they recorded October in a 2 day session that they didn't tell anyone about. It was recorded by Michael "Smithy" Smith, who has worked with Wolf Alice and Anteros, at RYP Recording Studios, and it's the first track from an EP due around the middle of next year.
They've been busy in the meantime. They played The Great Escape's Alt Escape this year with only a demo on SoundCloud to their name, did a 3 night headline residency at The Elephant's Head in Camden, and have supported Esmeralda Road, Mosaics (featuring James McCartney) and Tough Cookie.
According to the press release, October has anthemic guitars and self-reflective lyrics, and the "for fans of" list is Wunderhorse, Overpass and Inhaler. What stood out most for me though was the melodies – they're really strong, and they weave through the track so easily that they're stuck in your head after one listen. It's the kind of songwriting that only sounds easy because it's been done so well.
Upcoming gigs:
- 20 November – The Elephant's Head, Rock Revival presents The Rolling People
- 7 December – The Garage, supporting Andrew Cushin
