Lowsunday started out in Pittsburgh in 1994 as Low Sunday Ghost Machine, mixing darkwave and shoegaze long before it came back into fashion. They released a debut album in 1996 and Elesgiem in 1999, then went quiet for nearly 25 years before coming back in 2025 as a duo – original member Shane Sahene (vocals, guitar, synth, bass and drums) and Bobby Spell (bass, guitar and drums).
Since then there's been the White EP (number 2 in Post-Punk.com's best EPs of 2025) and the Black EP, both on Projekt Records, and now Call Silence Remixed, a 2 track single out on 9 October. Call Silence is refreshingly free of any unnecessary frills – it just lets the main ideas speak for themselves, and that simplicity gives it a clarity that works really well.
The 2 remixes go off in completely different directions. The Silent Tribe Remix is by Psychotribe, aka Peter Guellard from DEATĦ B¥ LØVE (yes, that's how it's spelt), and it takes the song into EBM and electronic territory. The other one is by Sam Rosenthal, who founded Projekt and is the man behind Black Tape For A Blue Girl, and his version is all drones, space and distant vocals. The "for fans of" list runs from Underworld and The Chemical Brothers to Front 242, which is quite a spread.
Guellard also filmed and directed a noir video for his remix, starring Shane Sahene and Sereny Welsby, shot around brutalist concrete buildings like the University of Pittsburgh's Posvar Hall. He grew up in communist Poland surrounded by enormous residential blocks, and says those buildings mean "coldness, loneliness, and loss but also longing for my homeland" to him. He's been in the goth and industrial scene for over 30 years – the Polish band Blitzkrieg in the 90s, then The Electric Hellfire Club, Mace and Dichro before DEATĦ B¥ LØVE.
By the way, Lowsunday's She Follows Rain is also on We Are The Beautiful, Cherry Red's recent 4CD shoegaze box set, if you like that sort of thing.
